Lake Buchanan

Lake Buchanan is the second largest Highland Lake in Central Texas. The lake has over 22,000 acres of surface area and 124 miles of shoreline. With all that space, you can enjoy the lake and never feel crowded. Some of the more popular activities on Lake Buchanan are fishing, boating, swimming, and camping. Fishing, in particular, is very popular. Lake Buchanan is stocked with a number of species of fish for recreational fishing. Primarily largemouth bass, striped bass, white bass, and catfish.

Fishing

Fishing opportunities on Lake Buchanan vary by species, season, and location.  Keep up to date on "what's bitin on what and where" on the Texas Parks and Wildlife fishing report.

White bass and striped bass spawning runs up the Colorado River occur in February and May. Your best bets for white bass include small crankbaits and live minnows. For striped bass, try live shad along dropoffs. Shad are obviously a great bait when you see birds chasing schools of shad.

Best luck for largemouth bass is is the spring and fall. For a variety of reasons, largemouth bass tend to stay in the lake's shallow waters. In general, try spinnerbaits in clear sections of the lake and crankbaits along rocky shores. Once the water warms up in the summer months, use downriggers with white or yellow bucktail jigs to target striped bass.

As for catfish, Lake Buchanan contains blues, yellows, channel, and  catfish. Use of live bait is best for catfishing.

Reviews

Lake Buchanan is just beautiful. Blue water and waterfalls and amazing rock formation inside the canyon. We stayed at the Canyon of the Eagles and took their tour boat. Great tour guide and enjoyed the history. It's a beautiful place!

Great location. Glad they made it easy to find. It is on all my maps, since 1938. My maps show numerous public & private points of access (confirmed). It's OK to see (& the hill country) from a distance. I like seeing it up close. It is gorgeous! Not too crowded & crazy like Lake LBJ or Lake Travis. East side of the lake better.
Easy to Find. On Maps. Justin W, Trip Advisor
I enjoyed taking photos and videos of the area. There's no internet and little cellphone service. But, the wild flowers and the lake well worth admiring.
